“Find what you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life. My mom gave me that advice when I was searching for my career, and she was spot on.”

As a young man at Central Michigan University, Hank Winchester (Central Michigan ’92) hoped to find a social circle that would enhance his college experience. Sigma Pi provided him with a brotherhood of likeminded people, and Hank appreciates his four years in Delta-Alpha Chapter that prepared him for a successful career in media.

A Sense of Belonging

“I felt instantly at home in our house just off campus,” Hank said. From Fraternity traditions to volunteer opportunities, he made the most of his Sigma Pi membership while cherishing new bonds with his brothers.

“We, as a Fraternity, would always volunteer with the Special Olympics winter events in Northern Michigan. It was great helping the athletes—seeing them shine and then spending nights out with the brothers getting in some skiing during our free time.”

Hank had the opportunity to develop professional skills through Fraternity officer roles, including social chairman and chapter president. Being president was a great honor that came with several new responsibilities. “It allowed me to get involved in every aspect of the Fraternity and chapter house while also allowing me to connect with many other Greeks in leadership roles.”

During his term as social chairman, Hank especially appreciated the chance to meet other Fraternity and Sorority members on campus. “The friendships, the fun, the sports, and community involvement all provided key moments during my college years.”

Moving into Media

Hank already knew he wanted to work in television while he was at CMU. Beyond college, he began finding opportunities to develop in the industry through work with small TV markets. Hank’s commitment to professional growth eventually brought him to WDIV, NBC’s local affiliate in the Detroit area.

“I have covered many significant news events from 9/11 to the arrest and conviction of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick,” Hank said. He also does consumer reporting through his “Help Me Hank” segment, investigating consumer complaints and tracking the latest stories within the metro Detroit community. “It’s great to see the work we do can make a significant difference in the lives of so many.”

As the media industry rapidly changes, Hank appreciates the challenge of staying on top of various stories and doing his best to provide accurate, fair coverage for the people of Detroit. While the methods to deliver content may differ throughout the years, he maintains a commitment to his professional duties as a reporter.

Throughout his career, Hank has continually valued his Sigma Pi experience that allowed him to develop several social and professional connections. “When looking for new opportunities or employment, knowing a Sigma Pi was a member of the work team immediately helped in creating connections.”

From TV to Podcasting

Hank has been friends with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and his wife, Kelly, for years. Kelly and Hank had the idea to start their podcast, The Morning After with Kelly Stafford & Hank, to connect with people and share various stories while talking about their lives.

“The results have been amazing,” he added. Despite the connection to the former Detroit Lions quarterback, Hank and Kelly’s show isn’t just for football fans. They are happy to embrace a wider audience that includes parents, friends, and many more. “It’s a great chance to connect in a new way and understand we’re all just trying to get through the day.”

Podcasting is a different but similar experience to Hank’s prior work in television. While the two roles involve speaking about current events and other matters, he realizes people choose their podcasts based on relatability. “You may watch a particular newscast or show because you like the content or the host; the same applies to the world of podcasting. It’s all about finding something you connect with.”

Hank loves his reporting job, and he is glad to have found a similar passion for podcasting. In his personal life, he stays busy as a girl dad to a 6-year-old daughter who is just now getting into sports like soccer. Hank also makes time to stay connected with fellow Sigma Pi alumni, especially thanks to social media. You can connect with him at hankw@wdiv.com.
