Procedure Is Everything
Igor Mihatov (NJIT ’09) Stays Committed to Sigma Pi

Alex Beaven (Pennington & Company), contributing writer

From undergraduate experiences to Convocation and alumni club involvement, Igor Mihatov (NJIT ’09) has learned plenty about dutiful service to a large organization. He continues to stay engaged with Alpha-Mu Chapter by helping new alumni transition into the Sigma Pi Corporation of Newark Inc.

Lessons in Management

As a young man at NJIT, Igor joined Sigma Pi during freshman year after reconnecting with a high school friend at a recruitment party in 2008. Igor’s membership led to him serving as third counselor, which taught him the importance of financial discipline within an organization.

In 2010, Igor attended his first Convocation and noticed a lack of coherence in the voting process. Years later, PGS Joseph Palazzolo (Monmouth ’00) directly approached Igor about becoming credentials chairman for Convocation.

“I was really just a spokesman who gave the report at Convocation,” Igor explained. Following the credentials committee’s work to determine current voting eligibility, Igor publicly announced the eligibility number to maintain a fair election. “Fast forward to the recent couple years, it went a lot smoother—it was a fair election.”

Staying Close to Home

Beyond Convocation involvement, Igor served Sigma Pi through nine years as treasurer of the North Jersey Alumni Club. The group is a single entity that serves two roles, doubling as the alumni club and Newark-based housing corporation.

“When I was an undergraduate, I was treasurer and house committee chairman. I saved the house thousands because I was handy and would end up fixing plumbing issues. The alumni were like, ‘he needs to become part of the housing corporation.’”

Igor remains heavily involved with Alpha-Mu Chapter through the current alumni transition process and attends chapter meetings when possible. He understands the importance of maintaining a trustworthy membership base, and he hopes to see Sigma Pi thrive at NJIT for years to come. You can connect with Igor at igormihatov@gmail.com.
