Honoring 103 Years of Upsilon Chapter

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, the Upsilon Chapter marked 103 years of brotherhood at UCLA. Founded in 1919 as the Ball and Chain Gang, Upsilon received its Sigma Pi charter in 1923 as the first national fraternity established on the University of California’s new campus.

This year’s anniversary brought together undergraduates and alumni in a unified effort. Chapter Sage Patrick Oliver and Herald Alex Ng worked alongside Alumni Association President Jay Ross and Chapter Advisor Bradley Riechard to deliver an evening worthy of the milestone. More than 150 brothers and guests attended. The program featured a prime rib dinner and a televised matchup where UCLA defeated No. 10 Illinois in Big Ten play, adding Bruin pride to the celebration.

For the 25th consecutive year, Brother Ross served as Master of Ceremonies. He opened the evening with ritual and a moment of remembrance for brothers who entered the Omega Chapter in 2025. Brother Oliver followed with a report on the chapter’s progress, including a doubling of membership, a stronger cumulative GPA, expanded campus presence, and the formation of a five-member advisory board to guide future growth.

The evening’s centerpiece was the presentation of scholarships in support of undergraduate brothers. Matt Sumrow, President of the Upsilon Housing Association, David Finkel, Vice President, and Brother Ross awarded 20 scholarships to 18 recipients. Their leadership reflects Upsilon’s enduring commitment to academic achievement and fraternal responsibility.

Upsilon thanks the alumni whose loyalty and generosity sustain the chapter’s mission. Because of their continued investment, the next generation of Sigma Pi men stands prepared to advance a legacy more than a century strong.
